HSL Version 8 There are 18 replies
Original Message posted by David Williamson on 17/05/2012 at 7:50:59PM
Version 8 will be heading your way soon-ish. I'm staggering the release so some will get it before others. The reason for staggering the release is that there are a lot of changes in this update and if I've got anything wrong then I'll need to resubmit it. Steam will be last to get the update, and Desura will be first. If you bought the game direct then you can also swing me an email and I'll get you a link to download the update. Anyway here are the changes/additions.

HSL version 8
Added Artifact selection and visual 'tell'.
Added additional credits.
Added workaround for non-english Windows usernames.
Added option to switch to Direct3D graphics driver.
Added character stat on mouse-over on title screen.
Added incremental saves to improve the chances of recovery after a fatal crash.
Changed poison to now wear off.
Changed starting character slightly to improve their chances.
Fixed poison not cancelling after resurrect.
Fixed various spelling/grammatical errors.
Fixed teleport, again!
Fixed Steam offline mode.
Fixed disappearing stairs issue.
Removed character race from title screen.
Removed FB from version number. This is now version 8.

I wander off for a few days (ish) and you come out with an update that has so much coolth? Fantastic! :D

And maybe one of them (removing race from chargen) was from my suggestion, and another (mouseover stats) from a great suggestion by Linkshot in response to my way-more complex suggestion of a tab-panel.

Happy player!

It'll hit App Store about the same time as Steam. Those two platforms are more involved to push updates to so I want to make sure I haven't messed up the update before putting it out on App Store/Steam.

When that will actually be I'm not sure. Probably/hopefully in June.

What about the Mac App Store version? When will the update arrive there?

It's for compatibility. Some GFX cards don't have great OpenGL support, especially those intel integrated chips. If OpenGL is working for you then you should stick with that.

Does direct3d run better?  look nicer?  what are the pros and cons of swapping to d3d, is it just a compatibility issue or are there graphical consequences as well

To use the Direct3D driver you need to add the command line argument "d3d7" or "d3d9" depending on which DirectX drivers you have. I usually do this by creating a shortcut to the app and adding the d3d7 parameter to the end of the shortcut.

Yeah, I couldn't find it, either.

Also I noticed an Ooze spawned on a floor Glyph without activating it.

I played a little with this new version and i have to say that all the visual changes improve the UI, so far it's all good. :)
I only didn't find the "option to switch to Direct3D graphics driver", but honestly i don't even know what that option should exactly do, anyway i don't see any button or Option menu for it.

Cool! Is this exclusive to Magus? That would make sense because it's the only "free for all" quest, in a sense.

That will have been it. Sometimes enemies will switch sides if you're really overpowered, a kind of if you can't 'em join 'em thing. It wasn't an intentional enemy reaction, but the way the AI is programmed means it started appearing emergent-ly. I could program it out of their behaviour, but you have to be very powerful and swift, and it should still happen rarely. I'll keep an eye on it and if they're doing it too frequently I'll remove it, otherwise enjoy your new turncoat friends.

I was, indeed. 4 Swift Blunderbuss Pirates steamroll things so fast.
On that note, allies need to stop dropping a weapon of one type for a weapon of another (swapping out the Blunderbuss for a Flamespear) just because the original weapon had -1 to Accuracy :(

Gooey daemons shouldn't be friendly. I'll have to investigate this. Let me know if it happens again. Were you by any chance swift when it happened.

There is now a way to shadeform in when this happens.

Oh, well even better.

Yes, it pathfinds to the exit, or it should. Let me know if it ever puts you in a place where you can't reach the exit.

Well this is new.

3, maybe 4, friendly gooey demons greeted me in Magus. I hit 2 because..well, usually demons are enemies.

It was on Level 3 and the cloner hadn't been used yet.

UPDATE: Oh no. Oh no no no. My clone ran in and the wizard blocked the door off behind him, leaving me and my clone's clone to wait.

UPDATE 1.1: Oh cool he won.

UPDATE 2: I just got teleported to an uncharted part of the map. Does teleportation use pathfinding?

Not massive as they are meant to be weak. I've given them each a typed weapon. The saracen is still very weak, but the archer and wizard are fairly competent now.

I hope you give the default classes a MASSIVE upgrade.

Just unlocked the Amazon, and wow.  I never realized how truly terrible the first 3 classes are.
