Hey David are you planning to release some new content for the game? I really hope so as i want to play more with HSL but i'm a bit tired of the same quests after around 90 hours playing with it.
If you're going to release something, do you know approximately when this is going to happen? :)

Once they are put in the proper folder they appear in your roster.

Yes but after that how do you unlock them? Do you have to die a certain amount of times or do they just come for free?

You have to manually insert them into the proper folder.

Oh, there's the floating head. I feel very silly now. And extremely forgetful!

As a relevant edit, I'd be happy to help with user-created classes!

I find it easier to have saved content be human readable. It helps when things go wrong to be able to glance at the raw save.

You're pretty much spot on with your assessment of the structure. New characters are fairly easy to make.

You could construct non-random levels, but you couldn't build a non-random dungeon as each level is only constructed when you enter it.

However there is also an xml dungeon theme format which can be used to construct entire new dungeon themes. When I get time I'll build a new theme so people can check the structure of that too.

If anyone does want to fiddle with the snapshot/character files I don't mind, but do remember to back up your data folder first.

What does this add? *downloads*

Looks like it adds eleven new player character types. Nice! And they are defined as XML files.

Which suggests that if we figure out what the XML fields mean, we can define our own.... hrm!

And while I was in there, I looked at snapshot.xml. Completely text-based game-save! Modder's delight! <3

That suggests that we could create and share our own user-designed non-random levels, with our own monsters, items, scenery, graphics, descriptions, behaviors... but there seem to be ref numbers, which require unique numbers, which seem to be stored in 6-char base-36, for ~2M combinations (ie, one uint's worth). We'd maybe need a central generator to prevent collisions, if we were to distribute mods...

But I suspect this and more will all come to those who wait, anyway, if the dev kit is released.

[It also suggests that a fairly simple 3rd party wrapper could be made, where the ladder down would become a save point, giving the *option* to move down a level, rather than making it required. Cheaty and un-roguelike, perhaps, but nice for more casual gaming if that's what floats yer boat...]

It works with the all versions no matter where you got it. You need to find the data folder first.

On windows: %APPDATA%/HackSlashLoot/data
On Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/HackSlashLoot/data
On Linux: ~/.HackSlashLoot/data

Then put the contents of the zip directly in the data folder. By this I mean there shouldn't be any subfolders in the data folder, just a bunch of files.

On OS X 10.7+ the Library folder is hidden. To find it open Finder and select Go>Go to folder... from the menu. Then type in ~/Library and you'll be able to browse it from there.

On Windows %APPDATA% is in different places. To find it open Explorer and type %APPDATA% into the path bar.

On Linux, well you are using Linux so you probably already know how to access dotted folders.

Hey, can Steam owners do this too? If so, how?

*EDIT* David just replied to a tweet of mine saying

"Yes it's the same way as non-Steam ver. Find the HSL data folder, and put the files there. I'll update the post with more info."

In case anyone else is wondering.

Sorry, but I don't have any info on when new quests and artifacts will be added. I'm pretty busy at the moment, but definitely want to add some more content at some point. Until I do please accept this peace offering.

Download

Download, unzip and then place the contents in Hack, Slash, Loot's data folder. Enjoy.
