I just purchased the game through the April Fools Bundle(harhar) and neither the download version directly from the bundle, nor the steam version I redeemed with the key seem to let me play. The game loads fine and I can start a new game with no problem, but after that the mouse does nothing. I cannot click to move anywhere, or search, or attack, or even pass my turn. I am hoping I am missing something obvious, I'm not against feeling stupid. Anyone have any hints?

Well, I have the error message problem FIXED.
Just go to C:Users[your user name]AppDataRoaming
and delete the "HackSlashLoot" folder
(CAUTION: the folder contains saves and unlocks!)
and everything should back to normal now.

UPDATE: I get the EXCEPTION: ACCESS VIOLATION crash bug every time I load the "Dark Hearts and Evil Minds" quest. The stones of power suffer from the same graphical error as the torches and fires, however every time one is on screen the error window pops up. Hope this helps with finding a fix.

I had this bug for about a day now, and I was playing around with it in order to send David some detailed information since I know a little bit about software dev.
However in the process I managed to quickfix my problem by dropping one of my equipped starting items by clicking on the icon in the menu, and I was then able to interact with the rest of the screen again.

Hope this helps you guys.

I am still trying to find a workaround for this. It is compounded by the fact that I cannot replicate it on any of my test machines. Even trying alternative drivers. But rest assured this and the Cyrillic issues are my top priority.

So...  Not to be pushy, but is there any update on this issue?  Not seen an official post to this thread in several days.

I'd really like to play the game some more, but right now with the buggy graphics and random crashes, I'd say that the game's not playable.

I just found this thread through Google and the same thing happened to me. I think it may be a sound issue. I was using Mumble - voice chat program - and when I pushed the push to talk button I got the same ACCESS VIOLATION error and now I have the same issues everyone else in this thread has had. I haven't been able to fix it yet.

Nope, I think its a graphical bug that everyone has with the newest version. I get it every time I play the game, even after I reinstalled.

Windows 7 x64

Game was operating normally a couple nights ago.  Died and quit without continuing anew.

Fired it up today, getting the issue where torches are swapping between torch graphic and blood-on-ground graphic.

Tried verifying game cache through Steam.  Also uninstalled and reinstalled game through Steam.

Can start game from main menu as usual.  All interface buttons appear to operate properly.  Once starting a new game, hovering over things will give tooltips and comments but only the shift button (shows key shortcuts), the esc button (back to main menu) and the ? button (load external site) do anything in-game.  Attempts to move with keyboard or mouse do nothing.

Also as reported, dropping an equipped item appears to temporarily resolve the control issue.  Issue remains resolved through death / new game.  Restarting the game client causes the issue to reoccur.

Using the above 'fix' does not correct the torch / blood display issue.

No other obvious graphical glitches displayed by this bug.

Perhaps the issue is caused by a particular unlock?  I believe my death count was at 25 this morning when I fired it up.  Unsure as to what other flags I'd unlocked.  Think Enchantress was the newest class I'd seen.  Been playing with it set to Amazon previously, so I may have missed an unlock when it occurred.

I'm guessing the issue is with something located within the save file, else it shouldn't have persisted through the uninstall / reinstall.

* Edit *
Deleting xml files in AppDataRoamingHackSlashLootData and starting does not resolve issue.  First boot after attempting this resulted in an Access Violation crash, second boot worked but exhibited the issues described above.  Restoring the xml files had no obvious effect other than the settings and whatnot being restored.

Played for quite a while yesterday with no issues. Went to play today and no go. Same as reported issues here. Nothing on my system has changed from last night to today. Windows 7; Steam purchase.

** EDIT **

Solved it! No idea how or why, but on one of my MANY attempts at a re-roll, I clicked the wizards staff (dropping it) and amazingly enough, everything went back to normal.

Good luck everyone! I hope this might help someone else. ;)

** EDIT-EDIT **

Also, the torches are still freaking out (technical term, yes; they're animating between torch and blood).

** EDIT-EDIT-EDIT **

Well, after a nice little run with a toon after "fixing" it, I received the below mentioned "ACCESS VIOLATION" exception. Upon reloading the game, I had lost all progress (and a new unlock, *waaaah!*). Also, this is the same issue as the newly reported post of being able to interact with the UI, just not the world. This seems to be happening to far too many people to be an isolated incident.

Not sure if I can assist with troubleshooting this, but it just happened to me.

The weird thing is it was working fine just a minute ago, but the game crashed. Upon resetting it, I got this bug (and all progress since the last reset of the game is gone). I thought maybe it was something to do with the settings files so I deleted everything (erasing my progress) and reinstalled/uninstalled but it didn't do anything.

Before the game crashed, I was seeing a weird graphical bug where in the prince's tomb all torches were flashing in between the torch graphic and a blood splat graphic.

Like everyone else if I drop something then my character can move again. I really doubt its graphic drivers. (FB7c steam)

Edit: It happened to me again just now, the error was an "access violation".

Same here, Linux FB7c.

A couple of additional things that might be unrelated.  Aspects of the screen flash, as in they are not drawn on every frame.  For example, text toward the right and bottom.  The description of the button appears just above the menu and that guy flashes as well.  Flashing happens on mouse movement and key presses, but not while animations play.

Game starts up and I can click on the menu buttons just fine.  Selecting a game and starting takes me to a dungeon with my character standing there.  I mouse over stuff and it highlights, but clicking does nothing.  Arrow keys do nothing either.  Control key does put letters on many of the menu buttons, though.

I would always recommend using the latest stable drivers for your GFX card. I am looking into this but I suspect it is OpenGL/driver related and updating may be the only solution.

I'm having this same problem too. I'm using the Windows demo from your site. Other than main menu I can't do anything (mouse or keyboard). Moving the mouse does make it look like clicking somewhere will cause a move or attack, but clicking doesn't do a thing.

I can drop something like that other guy by clicking it with the mouse, and only after doing that can I do anything else. I can't drop anything with the keyboard, btw.

Both computers I've been able to try this on have the same problem. Being fullscreen or not doesn't make a difference. 1920x1080 res on both computers.

Laptop: Windows 7 64 bit, i7-2630QM CPU @ 2.00GHz, 8 gigs ram, Nvidia Geforce GT 550M

PC: Windows 7 64 bit, i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz, 8 gigs ram, ATI Radeon HD 5800 series

I'm not so sure this is videocard related, as you can see the video cards aren't even by the same manufacturer. In any case I'm VERY reluctant to upgrade drivers. I'm not having problems with any other games on those computers and I've had bad experiences with "fixing things that aren't broke" in the past. Upgrading drivers for just one game is not something I really think I want to do.

That's interesting. It just shows how influential video drivers are on apps. Hopefully the same solution will help SoreThumbs too. Either way I'll still look into exactly what happened here.

Updating the video drivers seems to have done the trick, everything works as expected now. :)

I can't for the life of me think why that would happen, especially as it works fine for so many people. If you increase the window size until the game goes into fullscreen are you still unable to control the character? I'll see if I can find a rig to replicate this, and work on a solution. I'm thinking video card is the most likely culprit. If possible can you make sure your video drivers are up to date.

Okay, I have tested this on both machines. I can start a new game and the controls don't work, but as soon as I drop an item from the HUD, the controls kick in and I can play as normal.

If I restart the client, the controls are once again disabled until I drop something. Progress!

Strange. If the hud controls work does that mean you are able to drop items?

This is on two different windows systems. Neither key controls nor mouse controls are working. The only thing I can do is escape back to the main menu.

Desktop PC is an i7 with 6gigs of RAM and a AMD HD5770 1meg video card running windows 7.

The Laptop I tried is a Core 2 Duo 2.2ghz with 8gigs of RAM and a 4000 series AMD video card. Also running windows 7.

The laptop was running the direct download version from the bundle site, and the desktop was running the steam version.

Also what are your system specs, OS, Desktop res, etc? If you'd like to contact me direct to help sort this out then email me the info - contact@gooeyblob.com

Windows 7, 64 bit;
Resolution 1920 x 1080
Using an ASUS G73JW Republic of Gamers laptop.

I'm playing the game at 3x zoom.  All menu options work with the mouse, but nothing else works.  It's as if the game doesn't want the character to move..

I have the same exact problem.  Numpad, keyboard, and mouse will not allow the character to move..

Bought the game from the same bundle. :(

Are we talking about the Windows or Mac version here? Is it just mouse controls, or are key controls not responding either? Also what are your system specs, OS, Desktop res, etc? If you'd like to contact me direct to help sort this out then email me the info - contact@gooeyblob.com
